For millions of children world-wide, schooling takes place in a language foreign to them.
Enabling mother-tongue education, thus must be understood as the first step in making such schools child-friendly.
By starting where children are, formal education can become relevant. One global attempt toward this is found in Multilingual Education (MLE) programs. These programs begin by laying a foundation for the child through his or her mother tongue, and then gradually building a strong bridge to and from mainstream languages.
